LANDFILL BIOGAS ENERGY PROJECTS AND THE METHANE TO MARKETS PARTNERSHIP
Voell Chris, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, USA
Landfill biogas energy projects are
currently in place at over 1,100 landfills worldwide — with
almost 400 projects on line in the United States alone. Landfill
biogas energy is a proven technology that has been used for
electricity production, alternate fuel for industrial
applications, production of pipeline quality gas, and other niche
applications such as greenhouses. The projects provide numerous
energy, environmental and economic benefits.
The Methane to Markets Partnership is an action-oriented
initiative that will reduce global methane emissions to enhance
economic growth, promote energy security, improve the
environment, and reduce greenhouse gases. Other benefits include
improving safety and improving local air quality. The initiative
focuses on cost-effective, near-term methane recovery and use as
a clean energy source. It will be done internationally through
collaboration between developed countries, developing countries,
and countries with economies in transition — together with
strong participation from the private sector. The Methane to
Markets Partnership initially targets three major methane
sources: landfills, underground coal mines, and natural gas and
oil systems. Ukraine is one of 14 Founding Partner countries that
formed the Methane to Markets Partnership.
This presentation will look at landfill biogas opportunities in
Ukraine, and how they can be developed to take advantage of the
energy resource, reduce local pollution, enhance economic
development, and realize greenhouse gas reduction benefits. It
has been estimated that there are dozens of landfills in Ukraine
that are good candidates for landfill biogas energy projects. The
presentation will explore the technologies and techniques that
have been employed to develop successful landfill biogas energy
projects in the United States and the world. The presentation
will include information on technology applications, economics,
and project planning. The presentation will also provide an
overview of the Methane to Markets Partnership, and what advances
have been made in the first year of the Partnership, as well as
informing participants on how to become involved in the
Partnership.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Landfill Methane
Outreach Program (LMOP) is a voluntary assistance and partnership
program that promotes the use of landfill gas as a renewable,
green energy source. LMOP has assisted in the development of over
200 landfill biogas energy projects. By preventing emissions of
methane (a powerful greenhouse gas) through the development of
landfill biogas energy projects, LMOP helps businesses,
countries, energy providers, and communities protect the
environment and build a sustainable future. Methane is the second
most abundant greenhouse gas from human activities, contributing
16% of total global greenhouse gas emissions. Over the past two
centuries, methane concentrations in the atmosphere have more
than doubled. Methane is also a source of energy similar to
natural gas.
