FLY ASH BASED SOLIDIFIED BACKFILL MATERIAL

Sasek P., Schmidt P., Mann J., Brown Coal Research Institute, Most, Czech Republic

The utilization of fly ash must be searched for by its current production. One possibility of the use is at old mines liquidation, where the ash can be used as a consolidated filling material. The consolidated filling material consisting of conventional fly ashes consolidated by a hydraulic binding material is transported to a pit in a suitable slurry consistency which ensures the strength for definite pit sections up to 5 MPa. This material completely fills the inner of the pit and it becomes totally methane impermeable. Methane can subsequently be drained off from the mine space through a pipeline along all the length of a pit with its mouth on a surface. The physico-mechanical qualities of the material are also verified in the long term and formulae for pit liquidation are certified for a series of fly ashes and binders. Basic requirements on such materials include:

• material must be non-flammable, insoluble, unwatery, and non-expansive;
• it must not endanger the environment by pollutant evaporations or extracts with toxic matters;
• it must be free of metal objects.

Common requirements on physico-mechanical qualities are the pressure strength minimally 0.1 MPa after 24 hours, 2–5 MPa after 28 days.

Brown Coal Research Institute, j. s. c., has been concerned with the development of the materials and tested various binders so as the consolidated filling material fulfilled technical requirements. Various types of fly ash were tested.

The goal of the work is to verify the possibility of using the fly ashes at mines reclamation. The results imply that after well-selected consolidating additive it is possible to get a material which is suitable for main mine work sanitation.
