Considering environmental issues, the increasing production of solid residues is important due to scarcity of methods and solution for their management. This article presents a project that aims to research the impacts caused by residues of urban pruning generated by the AES Eletropaulo Energy Distribution Company, and also to develop the standardization of this residues composting, finalizing the management of this operation. The obtained results refer to the research done in the areas under AES concession, regarding the collection and the destination of these residues. It has been observed that 50 % of the Municipalities dispose their residues in dumps or sanitary landfills, while only 8 % compost them. Based on environmental and social responsibility concepts, it is expected that the conclusion of this work can assist the civil, public and private sectors to contribute to the sustainable development.

Introduction. The environment destruction seriously delays and harms the process of social and economic development of the nations, mainly in countries incapable of controlling its territory preservation, either for the lack of population awareness politics, or for the lack of programs to control the exploration of its natural resources.
With the strategy change occurred on the countries’ development council, and in these last decade, the governments were obliged to apply sustainable politics, because of social pressures, and natural resources scarcity. This article presents a project that has as objective to make a survey of the impacts caused by urban pruning residues generated by the electric energy concessionaire AES Eletropaulo, besides developing a method to standardize this residues composting, finalizing then, and the management of this operation.

Results and Discussion. The already obtained partial results refer to the survey made in all the AES concession areas, with regard to the collection and to the destination of these residues, being observed that 50 % of the cities discard the residues in dumps or sanitary landfill, while only 8 % perform composting (Figure).

in 24 cities of AES Eletropaulo
concession area:

This information has been collected in each city through contact with the Environmental Secretariat or Work and Services Department. After that, the project started a visitation to each region for ascertainment of the situation.

Also, as a result of the second phase of the project, some actions relating to the standardization of the composting technique are being held. The area that will be used for the experiments was defined, located in the POMAR Project of the Environment Secretariat of Sao Paulo Government, which consists in the revegetation of Pinheiros river banks.

Twenty four piles were made with residues proceeding from the AES Eletropaulo’s pruning, using four different treatments: control (only pruning residues); pruning residue and water treatment sludge; pruning residue and horse excrement; pruning residue and urea. Half of the piles use the traditional aeration method and the others twelve piles use static aeration.

The experiment is still in course. The physics-chemistry characteristics of the composting material are being analyzed periodically, and also the daily measurement of the temperature and pH.

Conclusions. Based on the concepts of environment and social responsibility, it can be concluded that this work will serve to assist the civil, public and private sectors to contribute with the sustainable development, presenting a panorama on the situation of the cities in the Sao Paulo metropolitan region, developing the standardization of the composting techniques. For future projections, it can be thought about taking this methodology to the cities assuring resources generation and reduction of environment impacts caused by solid residues.
