1. We created the municipal-solid-waste-pyrolysis-system (MSW-PS), an environmental protection and profitable MSW management technology (MT) for full utilization (no dumps and ash repositories) of unsorted municipal solid waste of the typical town or city. The novel MSW MT converts 100% of unsorted municipal waste into three types of useful products: a) hydrogen-and-carbon-oxide content pyrogas/singas, b) recycled metals or alloys, and c) multi-component glass-like slag. Industrial use of each of these products does not result in “second hand” waste, air pollution or environmental or hygienic hazards. 2. We modified a self-controlled pyrolysis method and designed a novel MSW-PS unit with a large vertical furnace. The MSW-PS furnace heats waste to up to 1,8000C, which results in complete thermal decomposition of organic and inorganic waste ingredients without oxygen and with uses partly returned and overheated “pyrogas”. The MSW-PS unit does not consume outside fossil fuel, generate air pollutants, or produce ash to be dumped in landfills, as do other waste utilization/disposal techniques. 3. An MSW-PS unit can be used for: a) utilization and liquidation of municipal waste dump repositories; or b) conversion of high inorganic-content coil, schist or peat fossils into methanol fuel; or c) environmentally safe and clean liquidation of chemical and bio-hazardous materials. Anticipated Business Effects The MSW-PC unit will annually treat 100,000 tons or ~1% of New York’s MSW, resulting in: (i) Production of the pyrogas, which comprises 95% of the gas produced by MSW-PS which is a mixture of hydrogen (48%) and CO (47%) and is used for: a) high temperature blowing back into the furnace reactor vessel; b) the rotation of the turbo-generator to produce 40,000,000 kW-hours of electrical energy or c) methanol production, to be used as a clean air fuel for cars. (ii) Hydrogen supported metal recycling process comprised of extraction, melting and further separation of iron, color, and noble metal alloy in the total amount of ~ 5,600 tons. (iii) ~ 16,500 tons of hardened glass-like slag, which can be grinded and milled into lumps and coarse and fine powder ash and used as valuable filling and binding additives to cement and/or concrete. Additionally there are other benefits, such as: (i) reducing or eliminating expenses for waste sorting and transportation; (ii) independent supply to district residents and local companies of electrical energy, hot water, and perhaps methanol; and (iii) each unit will create about 70 new local jobs.
